這是因為交流接觸器的吸合線圈的工作額定電壓，要求不同。我國低壓供電方式大都為三相四線制，(三根火線稱相線L1L2L3，零線N與任一相線的電壓為220V，俗稱相電壓。相線與相線之間的稱為線電壓，均為380V)。

現在交流接觸器的型號都根據GB14048.4和IEC60947-4-1標準，重新劃分了。將交流接觸器AC系列分為以下幾類。

它只是接觸器吸合線圈(A1、A2)的電壓值不同，其工作原理完全一樣。

常用的交流接觸器線圈的端子標號用A1.、A2標注。如上圖所示，它為一只線圈為380V工作電壓的交流接觸器，按圖中，將A2與三相交流電連接，A1端子與啟動按鈕的常開。

2連接，利用接觸器的主觸頭來完成自鎖功能(實際工作電路中是利用交流接觸器的一對常開輔助觸頭)。這里只簡化說接觸器的工作原理而為之。

當按下啟動按鈕，電流從按鈕的1常開點流向2→到停止按鈕2→按鈕的常閉→3，此時交流接觸器得電吸合。完成一個啟動的閉合回路。一斷吸合，馬上可以放開啟動按鈕，自鎖由交流接觸器的主觸頭完成任務。

停機時只需要按一下停止按鈕(2~3)，它由原來的常閉變為常開，這時交流接觸器線圈失電釋放主觸頭，由制造時的壓簧將E型硅鋼鐵頂起，電動機停止旋轉。
